Can’t get through life without the coffee..or craziness

I am a thirtysomething stay-at-home-homeschooling Momma of two girlies.  I am married to the best man on the face of the earth.

In my former life I have been a dental assistant and an Administrative Assistant.  In my spare time (what is that anyway?), I try my hand at writing and a bit of photography. I write a monthly column for a local Christian newspaper and my some of my photographs have been used in the paper. (some even on the front cover!) I am also currently the secretary for our women’s conference board. Once a year we bring in a speaker (This year was Donna Partow) and some special music. All the ladies are invited. We average about 130. It is a great time. I also serve as President of our local Home Educators Cooperative. That keeps me pretty busy. I also teach History using Story of the World to 4 students at our cooperative.  We are on volume 2, The Middle Ages. So far my students think the best part is the chocolate I bring.

My dear man currently works in radio. He also serves our church as Christian Education Director. Needless to say he is kept hopping.

Our girlies are Goober, aged 7 and Beanie aged 4.  They are as different as night and day. One of them is a night owl and the other is a early bird.  One rushes to complete an unpleasant task while the other one stalls doing it.

I taught Goober to read at 3.5 and by 4 she was reading Charlotte’s Web. Now she devours everything in sight. The other day she asked that I start checking the back of cereal boxes because the past few boxes have had the same words on them. Tongue out She loves Math (most days), thrives on history, adores spelling and detests handwriting. At 7, she is working in a 3rd grade book. She prints very neatly and her cursive is not bad at all.  She has been told if her neatness continues next year she won’t have to do handwriting.  Science for us a little hit and miss. Okay a lot more miss than hit. Surprised I am motivated to push it a bit more when I read statistics that show our high school graduates are not strong in Math or Science. But then I think she’s only 7. She has time. I have the book already and we have started it. That has to count for something.

Beanie was also taught to read at 3.5. She knows how to read, she just chooses not to. She desperately wants to read like Goober but isn’t willing to work for it. Which is quite odd because she has always pushed herself to do whatever her sister does. She is also working on Horizon’s Kindergarten Math and enjoys it. I think she isn’t learning much but who knows. She might surprise me. She finished her kindergarten D’Nealian handwriting book we bought last year. As of yet I’ve not purchased another one for her. I am thinking I will start in January with Horizon’s First Grade Penmanship.  We are also working our way through Phonics Pathways. Which she has a love/hate relationship with, so she has been told if she starts to read like I know she can, we won’t do anymore of PP. So far she is motivated. In the past two days she has read 10 BOB books. Beanie is at that awkward stage of learning to read where she sounds out a word on one page and can’t remember it on the next. Tongue out

This blog is just a recording of our daily (???) journey through homeschooling.
